Dr. Karin is a leading world authority on signal transduction pathways that regulate gene expression in response to extracellular stimuli, infection, and stress. In 2000, he was recognized as the most cited scientist in the world. His scientific achievements include identifying cis elements that mediate gene induction by hormones, cytokines, and stress as well as identifying and characterizing both transcription and posttranscription factors that recognize these elements and the kinases that regulate their activities. He has received numerous awards, including the Oppenheimer Award for Excellence in Research from the Endocrine Society (1990), the C.E.R.I.E.S. Research Award for Physiology or Biology of the Skin (2000), and the William B. Coley Aware for Distinguished Research in Basic and Tumor Immunology (2013).
Dr. Karin and his team particularly are interested in the signaling mechanism used by tumor necrosis factor, interleukin 1 and other inflammatory cytokines to promote tumor development and progression. In recent years, they have studied how these pathways link chronic inflammation and obesity to cancer development in organs, such as the liver and pancreas, as well as the role of inflammation in heart disease, diabetes, and other chronic diseases. Through this work, Dr. Karin has contributed to the founding of the Inflammation and Cancer field, earning him the Harvey Prize (2011) and the Brupbacher Prize (2013).
Dr. Karin is a cofounder of Signal Pharmaceuticals (currently Celgene) and has served as a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Signal Research Division of Celgene. He was elected for membership in the National Academy of Sciences (2005) and the Institute of Medicine (2011).
