Scintillon Institute proudly hosts
Charles F. Stevens, M.D. Ph.D.
the Vincent J. Coates Professor at Salk Institute for Biological Studies, former investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, and member of US Academy of Sciences
"How grandmother cells are made, and what they are good for"
at 1pm
Scintillon seminar room at 6868 Nancy Ridge Drive
Dr. Stevens, an esteemed professor at Salk Institute for Biological Studies and adjunct professor of pharmacology and neuroscience at UCSD’s School of Medicine, external professor at the Santa Fe Institute and general member of the Aspen Center for Physics, has made several seminal discoveries regarding the molecular basis of synaptic transmission. In 2002, he described the ‘3/5 Power Scaling law of neural circuits’ with Dmitri B. Chklovskii, Ph.D.
Dr. Stevens’, with Dr. C. R. Anderson, used noise analysis to infer the conductance of single acetylcholine ion channels. This work paved the way for the patch clamping techniques that earned Erwin Neher, Ph.D., his postdoctoral research associate, the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1991.
Dr. Stevens has been an elected member of the National Academy of Sciences since 1982 and was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1984. In 2000 he was awarded the NAS Award for Scientific Reviewing from the National Academy of Sciences.
We are so thrilled to host Dr. Stevens. Please join us!
