Scintillon Institute Receives Million Dollar Donation from the Step Family
Scintillon Institute for Biomedical and Bioenergy Research is honored to announce that it has received a donation of $1 million from the Step Family Foundation in support of biomedical research. This generous donation will significantly strengthen the ability of Scintillon, a rapidly growing nonprofit research institute, to attract the best researchers and further its efforts towards finding cures for neurodegenerative diseases.
The late Mr. Eugene Step is credited with being one of the early leaders who helped establish San Diego as a nationally leading biotech center through his leadership of Eli Lilly’s acquisition of local biotech pioneers, such as Hybritech, IVAC, and the forming of Guidant Corporation. He served as President of Lilly’s Pharmaceutical division for 24 years and as the Executive Vice President and board member of Eli Lilly Corporate and as a founding board member of Guidant Corporation.
“We are deeply grateful to the Step family’s kindness,” said Dr. Jiwu Wang, President of Scintillon, “This fund will establish the Hannah and Eugene Step Distinguished Professorship for Stuart Lipton, MD, Ph.D., Director of our Neurodegenerative Disease Center. Under Dr. Lipton’s leadership, we expect that our researchers will continue their pioneering work in finding cures for Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Huntington’s, Autism, and other neural diseases.”
In addition to being a professor at Scintillon, Dr. Lipton is also a clinical neurologist at the Medical Center of University of California, San Diego. He has helped many patients with neurological disease, both as their doctor and as an inventor of the market-leading Alzheimer’s disease drug Namenda® (Memantine).
Scintillon welcomes support and input from the local community and patient advocate groups. Through assistance like the Step family’s, we can fight devastating diseases better together.
