Scintillon Institute for Biomedical and Bioenergy Research is honored to announce that it has received a $5,000 donation from Vertex Pharmaceuticals in support of the Summer Internship Program (SURE Program). This donation marks the first corporate partnership for Scintillon, a rapidly growing nonprofit research institute, and will help expand this free program for high school students to create vital resume-building opportunities through faculty mentorship and experience working in professional research labs.
Vertex Pharmaceuticals is an international pharmaceutical company that creates new possibilities in medicine to cure diseases and improve people’s lives. They work with leading researchers, doctors, public health experts, and other institutions who share their vision of transforming the lives of people through science. They are committed to inspiring and equipping under-resourced students to become the next generation of scientific leaders through strong relationships with local education leaders, neighborhood schools, and students to help provide young people with a pathway to success in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) careers.
“We share a vision with Vertex, one where students benefit from early guidance by leading scientists,” said Dr. Jiwu Wang, President of Scintillon, “We believe in strengthening the career aspirations of today’s STEM students by exposing them to real world research situations and leading through example. We are happy to have a company of this caliber to work with us at this early stage of our own program’s development.”
The SURE program at Scintillon Institute aims to introduce top high school applicants to basic scientific research and prepare them for college. Led by Program Director Murat H. Digicaylioglu, M.D. Ph.D., the SURE program seeks to create a pipeline of future scientists for the highly competitive and successful biomedical research community in San Diego. Focusing on disciplined, detail-oriented high school students, the SURE program pairs each student with a Scintillon Institute faculty mentor who guides the student through the program’s curriculum up through graduation of the program and beyond.
Scintillon welcomes support and involvement from the local community and STEM supporters. Together we can invest in tomorrow’s scientific leaders today.
