Dr. Erkki Ruoslahti, former President of Sanford-Burnham-Prebys Institute (1989 to 2002) and member of US Academy of Sciences

Dr. Ruoslahti, distinguished professor at Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute and an adjunct distinguished professor at the University of California Santa Barbara, has made seminal contributions to biology of extracellular matrix and its receptors for cancer research. His work includes the discovery of the RGD cell adhesion motif.

He received the prestigious 2005 Japan Prize for his work in cell biology. He is a Knight of the Order of the White Rose of Finland. His additional honors include the Gairdner Prize and membership in the Institute of Medicine and American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
