Alysson Renato Muotri, Ph.D. (UCSD/Rady’s Children’s Hospital) presents “L1 retrotransposition in the healthy and disease brain” at tomorrow's lunchtime seminar

Scintillon Institute welcomes ALYSSON RENATO MUOTRI, Ph.D. (UCSD/Rady’s Children’s Hospital) as tomorrow's Friday lunchtime seminar speaker.

He will present “L1 RETROTRANSPOSITION IN THE HEALTHY AND DISEASE BRAIN" at 1pm in the 6868 Nancy Ridge Drive seminar room.

Originally from Brazil, Dr. Muotri earned a BSc in Biological Sciences from the State University of Campinas in 1995 and a Ph.D. in Genetics from University of Sao Paulo in 2001. In 2002, Dr. Muotri moved to the SalkInstitute in La Jolla, where he completed his postdoctoral training in neuroscience and stem cell biology.

In 2008, Dr. Muotri joined the Department of Pediatrics and Cellular & Molecular Medicine as an Assistant Professor at UC San Diego’s School of Medicine. Currently, Dr. Muotri’s research focuses on human brain development and evolution, exploring mobile elements as generators of neuronal diversity. His lab is also interested in modeling neurological diseases, such as Autism Spectrum Disorders, using human induced pluripotent stem cells.

He has been recognized numerous times, including by the NIH Directors (New Innovator Award), Emerald Foundation (Young Investigator Award), and as one of "The 100 most influential people in Brazil" by Época magazine.
